Thomas Abthorpe, FreeBSD Committer

Long time no post :(

For a little while I hosted my own blog, but tore it down. Didn’t write much there, either.

So what have I been up to in the realm of FreeBSD? For a while I was helping in the smallest way with KDE4 testing, I joined the ports-security@ team, and also the donations@ team.

I have also dabbled a little with British English translations. I have join the GnomeSword team as a translator. And now that I have a better grasp of qt-linguist, I have started working on Bibletime. I am not British, I am Canadian, and I much prefer en_GB spelling!

Hopefully it will be much sooner before my next post.

jadawin is flying solo

After about 4 months of mentoring my protege, Philippe Audeoud, along with thierry@, we have cast him free to commit in the wild.

Good luck jadawin, go into the world, and commit to your heart’s content!

Introducing new Ports Commiter, Philippe Audeoud aka jadawin@FreeBSD.org

I have been fortunate to work with Philippe since the fall, now I get to tor-ment him, along with Thierry Thomas.

This is my first mentee, so let’s hope it is a positive experience for all involved

ULE for Yule

At the start of Advent (the fourth Sunday BEFORE Christmas) I started building the ULE scheduler kernel for my system. I figure, if it is good enough for FreeBSD.org, it is good enough for me.

I won’t be providing any test results, or do any real benchmarking, but I will give it a try it out for a while.

Merry Christmas, one and all!

Procmail is your friend

Little did I realize when I became a committer I would be the recipient of 200+ emails daily. Between my optional mailing lists, coupled with internal FreeBSD messages, cvs-commit control messages, and gnats notifications, I found my Inbox filled up, quickly.

I learned to use procmail. I highly recommend it. Apply some simple recipes, and voila, messages can be auto-filed for reference, leaving the Inbox a lot less cluttered.

Even if you don’t get a huge volume of email, check it out anyway!

100 commits

It took 2.1 months (according to cia.vc) for me to reach this milestone. I marked it silently by letting my mentor and my submitter know.

Ok, I guess I bragged here, too!

Spoke too soon

Right after I posted my first blog entry, there it was, pavmail. This message from Pav let me know a commit I made was broken. So, wouldn’t you know it on September 8, 2007, I earned my first pointyhat. I am sure my mother would be proud of me :-)

Once upon a time

I submitted a PR to assume maintainership of net/citrix_ica on May 25, 2006. It was my first real port PR, and it wasn’t even formatted correctly! I was fortunate, a sympathetic committer (clsung) committed it anyway. A little over a year, and almost 300 PRs later I have been elevated to the ranks of rookie Ports Committer.

Irconically, Cheng-Lung Sung, my first committer, has become my mentor. Seems like the great cycle of life. Under his mentorship I have committed some of my own ports, and closed about a dozen PRs. No pointyhats, yet! Yet is the operative word, I know it is looming out there, it is just a matter of when.

In the meantime, keep the PRs coming, and I will keep on committing.
