New gpg key for tabthorpe

with one comment

Five years ago when I started dabbling with gpg, I nominally knew what I was doing, and just faked my way through it all.

Introducing ports committer, Rene Ladan

with one comment

I am pleased to introduce Rene Ladan, (rene) to the ports tree! He has been a long time ports contributor, and a Dutch Documentation committer. He made the classic mistake of sending in too many PRs, so I decided to punish him.

Congratulations, Rene!

Introducing ports committer, Giuseppe Pilichi

with one comment

Last month (yes I know I am late), Gabor Pali asked me to co-mentor Giuseppe Pilichi (jacula@), to join the FreeBSD Haskell Effort, aka the Haskell World Domination team. As I had the pleasure to mentor pgj@ into the ports world, it seemed fitting to assist with jacula!

Congratulations, Giuseppe!

Catching up on recent events

with 3 comments

It has been awhile since I blogged, so I thought I would finally post some status updates.

A couple of weeks ago, Erwin Lansing popped up a window in IRC, he wanted to know how life was in my neck of the woods. The red flags should have went up, but they did not. By the end of the conversation, he had me convinced that I would be a good candidate for portmgr-secretary, a position he held for some time. Turns out, he accepted a position on the Board of Directors for the FreeBSD Foundation, and decided he needed to lighten his load. I accepted the position. Erwin tells me it will only a couple of hours a week of my time…

So in my very short tenure as portmgr-secretary, I have been fortunate enough to send acknowledgement emails to new ports committers, and announce in wake of FreeBSD 7.3 being released, and that the ports tree is wide open for commits!

Stay tuned, I hope to keep up Erwin’s tradition of portmgr related blog posts.

New ports committer, Alberto Villa

with 2 comments

I am pleased to announce my latest mentee, Alberto Villa. Alberto has been a dedicated contributor with the FreeBSD KDE team, and it was finally time to punish him with a ports commit bit.

Martin Wilke will be Alberto’s co-mentor in this little adventure!

Congratulations Alberto!

Dima Panov flying solo

with 2 comments

Dima “Red Fox” Panov, aka fluffy@ has been a dedicated contributor to the FreeBSD KDE team, and his hard work has paid off, miwi@ and I have cast him loose to collect pointy hats on his own.

It has been a pleasure being your mentor, Dima, good look, and may your INDEX breakages be elusive :-D

Having mentored avl@ for about the last four months, glarkin@ and I agreed, it was time to set him free. It has been a great pleasure mentoring him.

Congratulations Alexander. Good luck, and may your pointyhats be elusive :-D

Qt 4.5.3 has been committed to area51

with 3 comments

Nokia announced the release of Qt 4.5.3 today. It is a bug release version leading up to 4.6.0.

I updated area51 branches/qt-4.5 to 4.5.3. It is not quite ready for general use at this time. Contributors are welcome to check it out and provide patches as needed to make it build.

On a related note, KDE 4.3.2 will be tagged soon, so we need to decide what version of Qt to run with, feedback to [email protected] is appreciated

[CFT] Qt-4.6.0 technology preview ready for beta test

with 2 comments

The FreeBSD KDE team is pleased to announce the first public call to test Qt-4.6.0-tp1. It can downloaded from the area51 repo with the following command

svn co http://area51.pcbsd.org/branches/qt-4.6tp/

From there you can use kdemerge to overlay the changes to your ports tree. Please note that you will require some patches from the repo to get games/kdegames4 and net/kdenetwork4 to build.

Our initial testing has yielded a binary compatibility between 4.6.0 and 4.5.2. Please be aware that this needs more testing.

One other warning, the py-qt* bindings are still a work in progress. Dima Panov, aka fluffy@, is currently working on it.

Please send feedback to [email protected]

This branch was made possible by the hard work of Alberto Villa and other contributors.
